Survivor 20 Premiere Recap
I would say Survivor Heroes vs. Villains is off to a fantastic start. It was even better than I anticipated. I typed like 5 pages of notes as I watched because there was just too much going on to remember everything. We have a lot to cover so let’s get started.
Was anyone else a little disappointed in Rupert? I know his toe was broken but he was too crabby and couldn’t get things going. During the puzzle making of the immunity challenge he just stood there and when they needed a fire he couldn’t bring it so JT stepped up.
The surprise for me was actually liking Boston Rob. Where did that come from? Perhaps married life and a child chilled the boy out a little. He was almost charming, almost but not quite. I also liked the flirting between Coach and Jerri. Definitely didn’t see that one coming but I think they could actually make a good couple as the dragonslayer and black widow.
The episode started with the castaways arriving by military helicopter to an awaiting Jeff Probst standing on the cliffs of Samoa. Coach coined the title of this premiere with his statement of “I slay everyone and trust no one.” Now that is the typical dragonslayer comment I was waiting on.
After a few pleasantries we go right into the Reward Challenge and WOW! what a challenge it was. Teams of two from both tribes race out and dig in the sand for a bag and the first to bring it back to the mat gets a point. First up was Stephanie and Cirie for the Heroes Tribe and Parvati and Danielle for the Villains and these girls fought it out like men. It was awesome! In the end Danielle brings the bag back to score the first point in the game. Parv manages to dislocate Steph’s shoulder and they bring in the medics to pop it back in place. OUCH! Did yall see Jeff snickering as he walked back to begin the game? He had to put a hand over his mouth to conceal it. The next point goes to the heroes, a point scored by JT. Next up was Colby and Tom vs. Coach and Russell. I about fell out when Coach dragged Colby who held onto the bag over to the Villains mat to score a point. I never would have guessed Coach had it in him. Next we have Sugar and Candace vs. Sandra and Courtney and once again the girls do not disapppoint. The highlight of the whole show, for my husband anyway, was Sandra undoing Sugars top and Sugar running topless with the bag to score a point for the Heroes and capped it off but giving Sandra the finger. Last up we have our next injury with Rupert breaking his toe in three places while James takes the bag in for a Heroes win. They receive flint as their reward.
Everyone gets to camp to start building shelter and once again, it turns into the Russell show. He immediately strikes a final two deal with Danielle and another with Parvati. Parv says she knows what Russell is doing but would rather play with him than against him and says she is making a deal with the devil. If you are on the Villain’s tribe, the devil is all you got so go with it Parv. In this camp, no one is doing anything; no shelter, no fire, no water. Rob takes it upon himself and rubs the large sticks together and low and behold we got fire. At least someone finally took some initiative.
Over at the Heroe’s camp, things are running much more smoothly. Everyone is working together and all are doing their part to build the shelter right. While they are working, 3 chickens and a rooster come walking out of the jungle. Now that is something you don’t see everyday. They take their fishing net and trap the chickens on the first try. Now they have eggs and JT breaks one of chick’s necks and they have a nice meal. Thank God someone from down here in Alabama is on the show cause we know how to handle chickens. A vast improvement over Sham last season. JT strikes up an alliance with James and another one with Tom who has one with Stephanie. Amanda and Cirie are also together so the game starts right off the bat. Sugar starts trying to get it on with Colby who wants no part and pisses everyone off for keeping them awake, a foreshadowing of what is to come I guess.
We move on to the Immunity Challenge. In this challenge 6 team members race to assemble a boat and use 7 planks to keep it together. They then paddle out and grab a torch with fire and bring it back. They disassemble the boat and bring the planks back to the starting line. Four people put together a puzzle and lastly, they make a ladder with the planks and all members race up with the torch to light the fire. The Heroes get an early lead but fall apart during the puzzle and the Villain’s come back and win.
At Tribal Council, Jeff asks a variety of questions about prior relationships and whether or not the four who tried to put together the puzzle are at risk. Cirie says “One challenge shouldn’t determine your worth in the game.” I don’t agree with that statement at all. One mistake can cost you the game and she needs to remember that. Sugar is voted out by everyone except herself. No surprise there.
All in all the season is shaping up to be the best ever. What was your favorite moment in the show?

I saw next weeks previews what happens to Rob Mariano??? He is passed out on the ground, oh no not Rob!!!!
February 12th, 2010 at 1:29 am
When this was filmed did Russel already know he had lost survivor 19 ?
February 12th, 2010 at 1:36 am
I’m seconding Lynda’s question – what happens to Rob?!?! I was surprised to like him in the premiere and will be bummed if he has to leave so soon!
February 12th, 2010 at 1:38 am
Scott B, russ had a ten day break between the filming. The official word had not been spoken but the contestants talked and he knew Natalie won.
February 12th, 2010 at 1:39 am
I will see what I can find out about Rob and let you all know.
February 12th, 2010 at 1:59 am
@Ashley, Ok I was wondering because on the season 19 finally Russel was so upset that I had a feeling he didn’t make it to the end in season 20.
So to clarify he had 10 days in between the live finally and the start of the filming of season 20?
Thanks again.
February 12th, 2010 at 2:20 am
Russ had ten dats between the last tribal council in Samoa and the start of Heros vs. Villains. He didn’t know he had lost season 19 to Nat until the Live reunion show last month so while they were filming he didn’t officially know that he lost season 19. You’re right about how broken up he was at the live reunion for season 19… He was probably thinking about maybe a poor performance in Heros vs Villains.
February 12th, 2010 at 2:21 am
*days not dats…
February 12th, 2010 at 2:22 am
Filming for Heros vs Villains was complete by the live reunion show for season 19…

It seems like this will be the best survivor ever. What a start. I was so impress by coach(i was not a fan)how he showed up Colby and my James was awesome. Ashley, Boston Rob impressed my too and I am not a fan.
Now on to my fav, Russell..he is getting on my nerves a little with his best survivor comments all the time. Dont get me wrong I agree with him but shut up already.
On to the Women, that skinny girl(cant remember her name) is awesome..for such a skinny girl she kicked a$$.
I can honesty say that the villians are more fun to watch.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:39 am
Ohh and people were wondering why is Sandra a villian, she proved why with that bra stunt.Freaking Awesome.
Tom and Cirie are great gamers, too bad they are trying to take each other out..if they could just combined their energy they would be unstopable.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:42 am
@June, Tyson has taken over from Russell as the new worminator.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:44 am
whoops, too excited so i type the wrong name. Oh well
February 12th, 2010 at 11:28 am
my favorite part of the show was when Boston Rob showed Randy that he could start a fire by rubbing 2 sticks together! I love Boston Rob, always have, and I hate the previews for next week! He better be ok, I dont want him to leave very soon.
February 12th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Wow- what a great fit. I would have loved to see Hatch back to play against Russel. Maybe I’m mistaken- but it seems so many are getting injured. What in the world happened to Boston Rob? I hope that Coach and Jerry develop a romance. Yes, the bra stunt was very funny.
February 12th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
My Takes
1- Boston Rob has matured a lot. Still has his edge but you can tell he’s a Dad now.
2- Loved the music. Hero’s was always upbeat then the villians would be dark. Great touch.
3- I stick with my belief that Rubert will not be fan favorite this year. I think he might even be shown is somewhat a bad light.
4- By no means is this the Russell show again.
5- Back to Boston Rob. That guy is sharp. He obviously prat ice making fire that way before coming on the show. Nicely played.
6- Since we are pretty sure they make it to the end, it looks like Parviti and Russell do hook up in an alliance which should be awesome!
February 12th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
@Skotie68 how are you “pretty sure” that Russel and Parviti make is to the end a make an alliance?
February 12th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Just rumors, I could be wrong.
February 12th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Whoa!!! We must all be on the same page. I was disappointed with Rupert. YOu can’t live on your past glory. And Boston Rob, what a surprise. I actually liked him at the end of the show. Jerri and Coach – oh, no, watch out. That could be dangerous. Good thing that Shambo wasn’t around or the chickens would already be gone. This is going to be a good season. Barney has been rotten all day. Good thing that I don’t believe in spanking, or he would have one really sore and red tush. Somedays he is an angel, and other days, he is a little devil. Anxious to know what happened to Boston Rob. Hey, who was Russell trying to get close to? I was in the kitchen, was it Parviti? That could be another dangerous duo. Didn’t see the bra stunt? Somebody fill me in. Love James – he is one cool guy, and I also like Cirie. She is a little overweight, but she is hanging in there. I thought that somebody told me last season that she had really gotten thin? Guess she is eating too much chicken?
February 12th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
I agree with Ashley … a great, long awaited start to the new season! Thanks for the awesome post.
Some observations:
- Coach looks like he’s really been working out since his season! He and Jerri would make some interesting little witchy dragon slayer babies.
- Russell seems a little starstruck. He is also far less pissed off than he was during the reunion show. Perhaps it is the sum of the two seasons combined which made him so angry.
- Love Cirie and James. I’d be so happy to see either one of them win.
- I think alliances may start to form along previous winners/ non-winners lines. Tom is right; if you take a winner and non-winner to the jury, chances are a previous winner won’t stand a chance.
- I agree with all of you. Boston Rob has mellowed! (Thus far, anyway.) He has done some skin shedding. Believe me, it takes guts for me to admit that … I have never been a fan of his at all!
- Rupert, dude … what the?! Please step up your game. It hurts when my heroes wither and die!
- Tyson makes my skin crawl. He’s also crazy, and not in a good way. Unlike Coach, who is also admittedly crazy, but it’s an enjoyable to watch kind of insane.
- I found skinny Courtney annoying during her season, and even more so now. She can go next.
- Amanda is hotter than ever. Damn! Does anyone know if she’s still dating Ozzy?
- Sugar sure picked the wrong cowboy to saddle up!
- I miss Shambo!
February 12th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
I’m surprised they didn’t show Russell looking for idols. You know he has to be looking already.
February 12th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Bet line of the night is when Jeff asked Boston Rob if he is surprised to be a villains. Robs response…”Im a Villain????”
February 12th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
Scotie68, I sure Russell is looking for idols. They just didnt want to show that yet.
February 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I couldn’t agree more, Ashley. I was pretty impressed with Boston Rob. Not as much as coach, though, who’s emotions seemed to be all over the place in developing crushes on both Jerri and Rob! And was it just me or did it seem like Jeff was targeting Cirie in tribal council? I’m sure she wanted to kill him because he was shining a pretty big spotlight on her. I love Cirie and am glad she didn’t go. Tom is correct by being scared of her! Blackgirl is right, he should have aligned with her. She’d be my first pick if I was on the island.
February 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Did the other all stars get to watch season 19 before it aired on tv?
February 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
From the interviews I’ve seen, Scott B, they did not see Russell’s gameplay. It’s a very good thing for him that nobody from his season is on to tell the others what a threat he is!
February 12th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Wow what a show. Hello to my peeps ash, blackgirl, and coop. Coop wheres the snow? Does canada need to borrow some? Im sure dc and philly ahve some they will loan chilliwack haha. Ok on to survivor. too many great things happened im sure i’ll forget something. The bra incident was too funny. Sugar wasn’t 1 bit ashamed and then to see her love of birds was great! Rob starting a fire after being told it wouldnt happen was very cool. The physical nature of the game was unreal. I doubt the 2 injuries will be the last we see. Colby got his ars stomped in the comp. His ego must be severely damaged. These folks know nothing of bruss but parv has his # right off the bat. Shes a force to be reckoned with. Rob is still amazing in this southern belles book. Love the yankee boys and their accents. Love to all. Lav if u still come on here e me please….moma d u too. Smooches
February 12th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
26# ChiBrad
Other side of the coin is if Russell had someone from his season on then he would have a built in alliance like most the other player do. Russell is on his own and having to start from scratch.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Can anyone confirm the final 2 rumors?
February 12th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Sugar scored a topless point at the start in the reward challenge. Guess she just pissed off enough of her tribe keeping them up at night and then failing to master the puzzle.
Win some, lose some.
I also liked Rob starting fire without a flint. Rupert couldn’t get the heroes’ fire going WITH a flint. Noticed the Villains didn’t let on at the immunity challenge that they already had fire.
OUCH! is all I can say about Stephanie’s separated shoulder being popped back.
I think Russell will be humbled pretty soon…
February 12th, 2010 at 9:10 pm
After watching the preview for next weeks show, I hope Boston Rob doesn’t quit the game.
February 12th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
I always liked boston rob and I hope he didn’t have to leave show early. It wouldn’t be as good without him. While I enjoyed russell’s game play last show he just seems a little annoying now. Rupert’s a great guy I hope he gets into the game. I do find myself cheering for the villians they are so much more entertaining.
February 12th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Couple of thoughts…
I have not watched many prior seasons, but I’ve been studying up for this one (something it appears that Colby also could have done). On Letterman, Boston Rob said he was stung in the balls by a scorpion…and I don’t think it was his scripted line. Might that be why he faints in the jungle?
I really, really hope that the villains put Russell in his place. Don’t love him or hate him, but this season will not be as amazing as I think it will be if they let him run the show.
February 12th, 2010 at 11:52 pm
Ouch!!!
February 13th, 2010 at 11:16 am
Good morning! Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I’m sick. I’ve been to the dr twice and finally got tons of medicine so hopefully this will take care ot it. A couple of things, for those wondering if the others got to see Russ before filming 20, the answer is no. Did russ know he didn’t win samoa? He had a real good idea. Even though he didn’t have the official word from cbs, he knew natalie had won. We knew from sources because the castaways told how they voted so I’m sure he did too. I will be doing the spoiler update monday morning and will put to rest any doubts about the final two.
We actually got snow way down here in the heart of dixie. About 4 inches. My son is almost 3 and had never seen anything but flurries and he had a great time. I bundled up and we made a snowman and had snowball fights. It was a lot of fun and probably why I’m more sick today but it was worth it to see him have so much fun.
February 13th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
Feel better, Ashley!!! That’s awsome that your son got to play in some snow, he may not see it again for some time.
February 13th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
#35 Ashley – Hope the meds have you back 100% in no time!! Been going down the sick road for a week now myself – but the meds are working. AND thanks for a wonderful, time consuming post! You’re the best!
February 13th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
As for Survivor – well I will say this one time and one time only, I have NEVER liked Parvati – she is a douche bag skank in my humble opinion. Hope you noticed that she intentionally injured Steph – no accident there. I will never “speak” her name again in any of my posts here. At least everyone knows who I really don’t like this season.
Rupert made me a little sad. James is TOO COOL! Colby is still Colby. Randy is still an ass. RussHell is RussHell. Boston Rob surprised me – is this the new and improved version? Go Amber! JT is still hugable. Tom is still REAL! Sandra is tougher, if that’s possible. Cirie is still manipulative. Amanda still whines. Sugar was WAY TOO NEEDY!! Steph still gives her all. Tyson still needs to wear more clothes and keep his mouth shut. Jerri is still the wicked witch.
As for the rest – don’t care much – except for my FAV KarmaMan and I’m with Coop – I miss Shambo!
February 13th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
Ashley, I hope you feel better soon. It seems you have our snow down there. We are basking in bright sunshine with only a trace of the snow we usually have at this time of year. I’m glad your little guy had such a great time. Every kid should experience a snowman at least once!
#27 Nanny, I hear from my Mom that the flowers are blooming early Chilliwack this year. Not good news for the Olympics … they need some colder temps for the snowpack on the mountains!
#38 Jeanne, I love your synopsis. You have a way of distilling the essence of each Survivor in a way that really rocks!
February 13th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
i hope russ goes out soon he just pisses me off with his arrogance and selfishness, i am glad sugar is gone as she was not a hero
February 13th, 2010 at 8:40 pm
Thanks guys! The antibiotics are working now and the rest of the meds are keeping me doped up enough not to be miserable lol.
February 14th, 2010 at 9:49 am
Happy Sunday everyone. Glad to hear you are feeling better Ashley. I not on her much for now because I lost my phone so do email and limited blogging for me until I get a new one. I feel so naked. well enough abut moi, cant wait to smell what Russell is cooking up for his tribemates.
Jeanne, your Karma man is pleasantly surprising so for..love the Jerri/Coach romance thing.
February 14th, 2010 at 10:07 am

February 14th, 2010 at 10:12 am
COOPER # 39 It’s blooming here in Sacramento California too it’s too beautifull too soon but love this 56 degree sunny weather her don’t miss that windy storms we have had for two months here LOL!
February 14th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Happy Anniversary, June!! Glad you’re on the mend, Ashley!!!! blackgirl, Jerri and Coach is cool – wonder how it will play out.
I saw some photos from a challenge and read a little about Rob which said basically he must have just pushed himself too hard in one of the challenges. The blogs I read didn’t even know for certain that was the cause of the fainting but thought it might be.
February 14th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Happy Heart Day to all! Happy 25th Anniversary, June! I read that Rob alluded to being stung by a scorpion in an interview. It will be interesting to find out exactly what happened. I also saw an interview with Jeff & Jordan about their AR experience. At one point Jeff spoke about wanting to “strangle her”, and Jordan replied “But we’re closer than ever now, right?!”, and he answered, “Umm, yeah.” I can’t wait for the AR season premier tonight!
February 14th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Can’t wait to see how jeff and jordan do on TAR tonight. I’m thinking it won’t be that pretty but they could surprise me.
February 14th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
I hope they surprise us too but I’m somehow doubting it. Their first challenge is to find their way to LAX using LA’s practically nonexistent and cumbersome public transportation. I don’t know why, but I think Jordan will do better than Jeff in this challenge, Jeff will find out that LA’s mass transit it much different than Chicago’s. We’ll find out in about 15 minutes! Regardless, I’m sure there will be a comedy of errors with JoJe!
February 14th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
So far I like the one gay/one straight bros. Not digging the lesbians at all. I also like the cowboys.
February 14th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Wow! Never expected them to come in first. At least they will get a trip out of the deal.
February 14th, 2010 at 9:29 pm
I’m impressed with Team Big Brother! I never forsaw them coming in first, either.
February 14th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Does anyone have any Amazing Race spoiler information? I hope Jeff and Jordan win it all.
February 14th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
February 14th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
omg i didnt know the amazen race was on oh blackgirl number 12 lol and i love the cow boys.
February 14th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
P.S. I want to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!
February 14th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
I want to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!
February 14th, 2010 at 10:37 pm
Duane thank you and Happy Valentines day to you too ok
February 14th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
#52 @Duane, this is not on good authority, but I’ve heard they only make 3 legs, 4th out.
February 15th, 2010 at 1:56 am
So far I like the Grandmother/Granddaughter, the gay/straight brothers and the cowboys. Jeff and Jordan did surprisingly well thanks to the Jeff part of the duo. If Jordan had had her way they’d be in China instead of Chile. Somehow I don’t think they’re going to last long. As ChiBrad said, it’s sure to be a comedy of errors.
February 15th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
#59 Cooper – You always make me smile!! “If Jordon had had her way they’d be in China . .” TOO FUNNY!! (too true, also!)
February 17th, 2010 at 11:25 am
Did anyone else notice how they dropped off the Heroes first and made them stand there while all the sand was blowing in their face for the Villians to land…perfect beginning!
And I love Boston Rob..normally I don’t like the macho attitude..but he can definitely back it up!
